    Reflect on this!

In this article we reflect on reflection. To do this, we share examples of pedagogic approaches used in undergraduate performance programmes at York St John University that re-situate reflective practice within creative practice. For example, we explore the creative, multimodal use of a catalogue document that two of the authors used to encourage students to reflect as part of the B.A. (Hons) Theatre level 2 modules entitled performing the self & artist as witness. These modules aim to encourage students to consider themselves in some sense auteurs of themselves and their art practice. The case study illustrates that we need to go beyond the familiar if we are to be reflexive about the role of reflection in creative practice education

Self-neglect and adult safeguarding: findings from research

This report was commissioned by the Department of Health (DH) and examines the concept of self-neglect. The relationship between self-neglect and safeguarding in the UK is a difficult one, partly because the current definition of abuse specifies harmful actions by someone other than the individual at risk. Safeguarding Adults Boards’ policies and procedures commonly contain no reference to self-neglect; occasionally they explicitly exclude it or set criteria for its inclusion The perceptions of people who neglect themselves have not been extensively researched, but where they have, emerging themes are pride in self-sufficiency, connectedness to place and possessions and behaviour that attempts to preserve continuity of identity and control. Traumatic histories and life-changing effects are also present in individuals’ own accounts of their situation. Self-neglect is reported mainly as occurring in older people, although it is also associated with mental ill health. Differentiation between inability and unwillingness to care for oneself, and capacity to understand the consequences of one’s actions, are crucial determinants of response. Professional tolerance of self-neglect as lifestyle choice is higher than when it accompanies physical/mental impairment. Professionals express uncertainty about causation and intervention

The price of land in the New York metropolitan area

The price of vacant land in an urban area is a fundamental indicator of an area's attractiveness. However, because the value of vacant land is hard to measure, indirect methods are typically used to gauge prices. A more direct approach to measuring land prices, using a unique data set, reveals that the price of unimproved land in the New York area is high, and rose sharply from 1999 to 2006. The rising trend suggests the underlying strength of the area's economy and the increasing value of the area's productivity and amenities.Land use ; Urban economics ; Federal Reserve District, 2nd ; Economic conditions ; Prices

If you have roads and streets that pothole or crack pre- maturely, it may be the gravel under the surface that is the culprit. Come learn what the sweet spot is for good gravel, how to test your own gravel, and how to make your poor materials better using full-depth reclamation (FDR)

Genomic architecture of Triops cancriformis sex chromosomes in response to sexual system transition

Sexually antagonistic selection has been suggested to be a leading factor in the reduction of intralocus sexual conflict and driver of sex chromosome evolution. Although the scarcity of empirical data makes it difficult to quantify the impact sexually antagonistic selection has on sex chromosome evolution. Triops cancriformis, have gonochoric and androdioecious (hermaphrodites and rare males) populations giving us a unique opportunity to assess the impact of sexually antagonistic selection across different sexual systems with different pressures of sexual conflict. We aim to characterise sex chromosome structure, differentiation and gene content in T. cancriformis populations with different sexual systems. We used paired-end RAD sequence data of 47 different individuals from two populations (gonochoric and androdioecious), in combination with two new genomic assemblies of T.cancriformis. We increase the number of putative sex linked genetic markers from 52 to 79, finding 18 contigs that are sex linked in both populations to a high confidence level. We accurately characterised the sex chromosome, determining that the sex chromosomes are most likely homomorphic. We find a smaller region under recombination suppression in the androdioecious population, divergent Z chromosomes between populations and determine two different lineages of W chromosome present in the androdioecious population. We also show evidence of a possible recombination event in the androdioecious population and determine a panel of genes that could be involved in sex determination
